New sales tax data improves for Collin County cities

The comptroller has released the latest sales tax figures for February, 2010.

With the notable exceptions of McKinney and Melissa most Collin County cities saw an increase in sales tax revenue over last year.

While not enough to pull most towns over year to date decreases, the latest numbers may be an early sign that the county is starting to see some recovery.

Overall, the county's cities reported a modest net increase, both over the same period last year, and year to date:

Collin County Totals:
February, 2010: $11,749,748.15
February, 2009: $11,537,799.70
Net increase: 1.83%

Year to date, 2010: $43,608,384.81
Year to date, 2009: $42,849,302.20
Net increase: 1.77%

Of the big 4, sales are stagnant. Allen's increase is tied to the new retail development but even that looks small compared to what it should be. Otherwise, McKinney is down and Frisco/Plano shows slivers of increase.
Overall, not the best of signs.

While the year over year decreases have leveled off and there is a slight 1.8% YTD increase in collections, this should be weighed in the context of two things:

- Last fiscal year's monthly collections were during the heart of the financial collapse/crisis and spending freeze so there should have been a snap back in this year's comparitive month numbers if there was a recovery in progress.

- The county has added 2%-2.5% more people in the last year so sales tax collections need to grow accordingly just to stay even. At 1.8% growth in collections we're still losing ground.

The City of Melissa continues to struggle and struggle. By passing the local option liquor election in Monember 2008 or May 2009 they would have been growing like their sister city to the North - Anna. Instead, they wallow in debt and no new businesses. They cut-off their nose to spite their face.
