Collin County District Attorney Race Q&A

The County Observer and The Frisco DWI Lawyer blogs have teamed up to prepare a 10 question Q & A with the 4 candidates for Collin County District Attorney.

The questions have been sent to each of the candidates. We have promised to post their unedited responses (or lack of) and we hope their answers will give voters a better understanding of the approach each one of these gentlemen plan to bring to the DAs office.

Bill,

Fortunately, we will be getting a new District Attorney (DA). Even though I am not a lawyer, I do have experience with the DA's Office and base this post of actual experiences. (We only thought we wanted Tom O'Connel replaced.) What a mess. With your help, I would like to give other citizens what I will be looking for in a new DA.

1.) A DA who understands that the Grand Jury should be used to determine if there enough evidence to take a case to trial; not used for one's personal agenda or to intimidate people.

2. We should have a new DA that will let justice be the driving force of the office and not the politics of a conviction rate that means nothing.

3. If repeat offenders choose to plea guilty, make the punishment serious enough that the offender will know that we are tired of the revolving door system.

4. Hopefully, a new DA will allow personnel to act like DA personnel and not small town police officers. Apparently, we have too many DA investigators with too much time on their hands.

5.Allow prosecutors to present cases to juries without fear that they may loose their job or be reprimanded. Contrary to what some believe, as citizens, we know there is no way to tell what a jury might do. Good cases can be lost for no reason of the prosecutor and we know that. If a defendant is allowed to plea guilty for a very weak punishment, the prosecutor may get a mark for a conviction, but justice has not been done.

7. Work with the Sheriff and Police Chiefs. You may be surprised that they can have good ideas that would improve the Collin County Criminal Justice System.

It is my opinion that if we will focus on issues of this nature, we may just get the caliber DA that we deserve.

Thanks
