219th District Court: Candidates forum

When Judge Curt Henderson announced his retirement, a three person race to replace him on the 219th District Court was underway. The 219th is a court of general jurisdiction, meaning it handles felony criminal trials as well as family law and civil cases.

The three candidates or the Republican nomination appeared at a forum held last night and sponsored by the Collin County Conservative Club. Here are their opening statements.

Bill

Scott Becker

Wendy McMillon

Angela Tucker

By far, Angela Tucker is the most qualified in this race and she presents herself in a very professional, well-spoken manner. I am very impressed.

Angela's presentation and experience makes it an easy choice for this bench. She certainly has the qualities needed to be a judge.

Scott Becker is the best choice in this race. He is smart, hard-working and even-tempered - the exact qualities needed in a judge.

Although Angela is a nice lady, she has not shown the kind of sustained work ethic needed for an important bench like this one. She didnt even know which bench she wanted until some political advisers told her which to pick. This shows she is too easily influenced by outside sources. Combined with her questionable choice of current law partners, it makes one doubt her professional judgment. As for Ms. McMillion, I can't support someone for judge whom I've never seen even stand up in a courtroom. She needs some practical expierence before taking a bench.

Overall, Becker has the chops for this bench and the others do not.

Becker is clearly the best candidate. As I have said before, I observe how hard a candidates works to earn my vote and that tells me how hard he/she will work for me if elected.

Becker has cammpaigned early and tirelessly. Tucker waited until the last minutes, switched benches to run for based on political expediency. I don't know anything about her law partners - and that does not weigh into my decision.

The hard working choice is clear - Becker.

One does not have to be passionately against any candidate to be passionately convinced that one candidate is clearly the best choice: That candidate is clearly Scott Becker. With Scott Becker on the bench the voters of Collin County will get the temperament needed to hear both sides of all cases, the appreciation for the role of the courts in our society needed for proper judicial restraint, and the moral fiber needed for doing what's right despite "practical" risks that may accompany unpopular but correct decisions. Scott Becker is a breath of badly needed fresh air in the Collin County judiciary. The voters should put their trust in him in the upcoming primary.

I think Tucker has some possibilities but I believe I have a better of understanding where Becker is because of his efforts. Becker has been speaking to us for six months and he has made it clear that this is important to him, and that he will work very hard and long for his principles. He is all about the Constitution. He is passionate to acheive his goals and I respect this. This is the one I respect the most.

I find it interesting that somehow some people seem to be equating efforts toward campaigning with actual qualifications for the bench. I personally know both Ms. McMillon's work ethic, which is outstanding and relentless, and her in court abilities, which are compelling.
Campaigning is a political function, so I guess if you are impressed by merely that, that is you own thing. But as someone who has practiced before judges all over Texas, I am impressed by the true litigator in this race, Ms. McMillon.

It is easy to endorse a man, Mr. Scott Becker, who clearly shows his willingness and ethical capacity to understand that a vital interpretation of the Law is to act on the awareness that "Parental Rights" are fundamental rights protected by the United States Constitution for all fit parents. It takes guts and courage to stand up and do the right thing for the people who go before the bench; it takes even more courage to do the right thing for the best interest of the children.

Given the mix of cases on the docket of this court, the most qualified candidate is Wendy McMillon. The others have virtually no civil experience. Accordingly they have virtually no experience dealing with the substantive legal issues that are paramount everyday in this court. Given that, I expect that an inordinate amount of time would be spent by Becker and Tucker getting up to speed on the civil legal issues that present themselves daily and with frequency. We don't have enough courts in Collin County now and the citizens here don't have the time for these other candidates to "learn on the job". McMillon's legal knowledge and work ethic are without question. She will be an excellent jurist.

I still haven't decided who to vote for but if you polled every candidate(probably including jps) and asked them are they for the best interest of the child, the response would be unanimously yes.I bet every single candidate would vote to be tougher on crime and I bet we don't have anyone that isn't a conservative Chritian running.Point being to say it takes courage to do what is in the best interest of the child is laughable and not a reason to vote for someone.Lots of buzzwords that do nothing to seperate the canidates.
