DMN - Collin County Legislative Races

3 Republicans, 2 Libertarians seeking McCall's Plano seat

Tuesday, January 5, 2010
Brandon Formby, Theodore Kim and Ian McCann / The Dallas Morning News

The hottest legislative race in Collin County will be in House District 66. Three Republicans and two Libertarians will vie to replace longtime state Rep. Brian McCall, R-Plano, who is not seeking re-election for the western Plano seat.

They include former Plano City Council member Mabrie Jackson; Wayne Richard, founder of an advertising technology firm and a group called the National Coalition for the Defense of American Sovereignty; and Van Taylor, a real estate financier and former Marine.

Libertarians Josef Novak and Benjamin Westfried will face off in a party convention in March for a spot on the November ballot.

No Democrats filed to run in any legislative races in Collin County.

In other races:

• In House District 67, veteran state Rep. Jerry Madden of Plano drew no Republican challengers. No Democrat filed for the seat, either.

• In House District 70, incumbent Republican Ken Paxton will be challenged by Libertarian David A. Johnson.

• In House District 89, incumbent Republican Jodie Laubenberg had no challengers in any party.

• In state Senate District 8, longtime Republican Sen. Florence Shapiro, R-Plano, will face David Hall, a former Plano school board candidate and self-described futurist, in the GOP primary.

This is not good for the Republican Party here in Collin. It basically says that no one in the Party thinks they could do a better job than any of these life-term politicians? I find that hard to believe. My train of thought is that when there isn't one person who will step up and challenge political party leadership at the county level, the county leaders have successfully scared the hell out of anyone thinking about running against them.

I spoke with a very forward thinking, intelligent Republican who was seriously considering challenging Sam Johnson. I heard rumors that he was going to and so when I heard he did not file, I picked up the phone and gave him a call this morning. I was very dissapointed in what I heard. I will say, this man would do a heck of a job giving new leadership to this county and in Washington, but he told me that a current elected official and a former elected official in Plano personally called him to say that they appreciated his ideas and thought he would have a future in the party, but if he ran against Sam, his political future would be ruined. He did say that they were "cautionary" calls, but admitted that they sounded more like calls from potential 2012 District 3 candidates. The Republican Party of Collin County has truly lost its grip with the future. Why wouldn't we encourage people to run and challenge the status-quo? Why wouldn't we want to see new leaders get valuable campaign experience and give voters an opportunity to learn about our future leaders. The leadership of this Party seems more like a group of controlling good-ol' boys. How sad that we have all let it come to this.

Davis: I agree with your point and would add that you could place any party's name in your analysis and be equally accurate. In every region where I have lived, the misleadership of the party in majority affirmatively prevents the grooming of new talent.

I will say that in my meeting with folks throughout Collin County, the nutty, fringe elements of both parties are in a tiny minority. But, man!, they have all the energy.

In any meeting of 12 people, 11 will represent variations of reasonable, considered thought (not always the same thought, to be sure) and one will be a nut. And it's the one nut who just won't shut up.

You can observe the same thing on the microcosm of Bill's blog: several people will attempt to engage in a reasoned discussion of a point when one guy will show up and just tirelessly disparage the others.

This demonstrates to me that our biggest task is to impart courage and energy to the coming generation of our leaders.

Sam Johnson is nowhere near the status quo! Congressman Johnson is one of the most respected and admired people in Washington and is able to get things done. Sam Johnson not only has tremendous support and influence from his own party, but he has earned respect from across the aisle and independents alike. It is a free country, and anyone is free to file. However, if Republicans thought Sam Johnson needed to be replaced, people would step forward, but that’s just not the case. It’s that simple.

What legislation has Sam Johnson introduced that you are proud of?

Susan, I would like to hear you answer that question. What legislation has Sam anchored the effort in congress? All that I am saying is, yes, Sam is a great guy, but I don't think it takes a political guru to go to Washington and say "NO" to everything the administration spits out. He needs to be proactively PROPOSING legislation. As far as I know, that is supposed to be his job.

Well, for starters – working to break up the old Wright Amendment. By doing that, he helped opened up more competition and choices for airlines passengers out of Love Field. And in times like these, I’m glad he’s there to stop BAD legislation – like the government takeover of health care.

I still haven't learned of any example of any legislation introduced by Rep. Johnson. Voting really doesn't make someone a stand out. Let me know when you can think of one.

Susan-

TWENTY years in congress and all you can say is that he helped competition at love field? Are you serious? And that's my point, if all you have to do to be a congressman is say "no" and not actually propose alternative legislation, ANYONE is capable of being a congressman. At this point, it's no longer what the legislation is, it's about who proposed it and if it's a democrat, vote No. ANnyone can do that, so why do we need Sam up there doing it? He's been up there for TWENTY years and you said he helped spur competition at Love field. Wow.

For a listing of his legislative track record, I encourage you to check out his website for detailed information regarding legislation, etc. (samjohnsonforcongress.com). Congressman Johnson sits on Ways & Means, the chief tax writing committee in the House. He is a strong voice for us in North Texas and plays a large role in securing funding for our local transportation needs – which is very important given the recent growth in Collin County. I came on here to stand up for Sam because I believe in him, not to carry on a long, drawn-out, back and forth discussion. Thank you for your replies, but it apparent that you've both made up your minds. Signing off...

Susan,

I have been a Sam Johnson supporter since his days in the Texas House. I also note that my 2 kids have been born and now attend college all during the time Sam has sat in Washington as our congressman. You see where I am coming from. At some point, enough is enough.
