The Keith Self side show

County Judge Keith Self has posted his written statement given to the Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committee on SB855.

Sen. Watson lectures Keith Self at SB855 hearing

The written statement is very different from Self's oral testimony last week. Both however refer to the Local Option Transportation Act as a "tax increase". That characterization was hotly disputed by Senators Carona and Watson during Self's appearance at the committee hearings.

In a phrase reminiscent of Self's February, 2008 weird blog post comparing the NCTCOG to the Soviet Union's central planning, Self several times refers to the bill as building "a command economy".

On Sunday, the Dallas Morning News wrote an editorial piece on Self's appearance at the hearing. Calling it the, "Keith Self side show", the editorial noted that "Keith Self doesn't speak for all of Collin County", and that the senate bill gives local taxpayers a choice on whether to tax themselves or not.

On Monday, Judge Self is expected to brief the Commissioners' Court on his testimony and the status of SB855 and other bills the court has labeled priorities. At his briefing at the last court session, Self described the committee hearings as no place for "sissies". I wonder if he'll now be comparing Austin to Golgotha.

After the near lynching Keith Self has received in his last two appearances before a legislative committee, the Commissioners Court might do well to appoint one of its more rational members as their spokesman for any future committee testimony.

Bill

Update: March 25 - by a 7-2 vote, The Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committee passed SB855 to the full Senate.

I read his blog you linked to and it raises a lot of very good points. I agree with him.

In the end, this bill is about getting new taxes for mobility - period. Saying it's about giving people choice is hogwash. The rail proponents tried and tried to raise the sales tax cap and failed. They are going this route now.

Use the taxation you have now and end the diversion to the general fund. Common sense.

He's right about the budget getting bigger much faster than population and inflation. That's expected.

Plano will be completely screwed if this passes and Collin County votes to create new taxes. They are already paying $60 million per year so 1% can take the train.

You are right, Scot, this bill may create new taxes - so what. This bill allows VOTERS to impose new taxes on themselves instead of a handful of elected officials.

As a staunch Republican myself, and I would much rather get to vote on my taxes directly instead of letting people like Keith Self do it for me.

And the fact remains - Self is an embarrassment to this county. It doesn't matter if he's wrong or right. His methods prove his in un-savvy and incapable of leading this county.

I'd rather axe them right now. I voted against new taxes when I voted for fiscally conservative leaders. I'd rather have my representatives head them off at the pass right now.

"And the fact remains - Self is an embarrassment to this county."

Ad hominem statements don't persuade me.

Well now that's silly. To say that you elect conservative officials so they can take care of keeping taxes low for you is a justification for preventing the voter's themselves from holding an election is, well, anti-Democratic I think.

What you REALLY mean is that you'd rather demend on the commissioners court as it exists today to go against what voters might want. So, instead of an up and down vote amoungst the electorate you'd rather have Keith Self fighting the 'good fight' for you. But what if the court was trying to offer benefits to domestic partners or declare all forms must be in English and Spanish, I have a feeling you'd REALLY want to vote on that yourself.

If you don't like the way this county votes - which is pretty conservative - you can always move to Grayson County, but progress will come there too - so Fannin County might be the safer bet. But, they have DA's that like little kids out there - so you might want to be care there.

Oh hell, why not just put it up for a vote here in Collin County and see how the chips fall. You're not nervous, Mr. Walker, are you?

"To say that you elect conservative officials so they can take care of keeping taxes low for you is a justification for preventing the voter's themselves from holding an election is, well, anti-Democratic I think."

The public is too ignorant to make those decisions, which is why this country is a Republic. Most Americans don't even know who Nancy Pelosi is.

In a true Democracy, people vote for free ice cream and no homework. Our country's founders knew this, which is why we have a Republic.

"What you REALLY mean is that you'd rather demend on the commissioners court as it exists today to go against what voters might want."

No, I'm telling my elected representatives to vote against this bill, which is my right.

"But what if the court was trying to offer benefits to domestic partners or declare all forms must be in English and Spanish, I have a feeling you'd REALLY want to vote on that yourself. "

Actually, the people did vote in California to make marriage between a man and woman only. So you are saying you want that the law and you don't want the courts to come in and overturn it?

This bill is not voted on by the public and I want my representatives to vote against it. You seem to think that every bill should be open for a vote by the public. That's, obviously, ridiculous.

"If you don't like the way this county votes - which is pretty conservative - you can always move to Grayson County, but progress will come there too - so Fannin County might be the safer bet. But, they have DA's that like little kids out there - so you might want to be care there."

Again, the only reason why this bill exists is because the pro-rail advocates have failed to get the existing taxes increased. That's good. That means my representatives have done a good job.

Your definition of progress is funny. Plano has DART. Is that progress? It's been a huge drain on the city's tax revenue for no benefit at all. DART light rail stations were supposed to magically transform old downtown Plano into a huge tax generating engine. Years later, the city is still throwing millions at that area.

And because Plano doesn't have the economic incentive fund that Frisco, McKinney and Allen do (because they aren't DART member cities), those cities have been able to win projects that Plano wanted. Do you have any idea how much sales tax revenue Plano loses every single day because Frisco got Stonebriar (with their economic incentive fund) and Plano didn't?

That's progress?

Plano spends $60 million per year so 1% can take the train. They have huge deficits that would be surpluses if they weren't a DART member city.

And you keep ignoring the great points that Self made about the logistics of these new taxes and projects and double taxation. Did you even read his blog?

"Oh hell, why not just put it up for a vote here in Collin County and see how the chips fall."

Let's do that with abortion, guns, gay marriage, income taxes, sales taxes, Christmas displays on government property, etc. and I'll do it for new mobility taxes. Nervous?

Wait, someone listed as "anon" is criticizing me for using a pseudonym? Ha!

Yes, I used Thomas Walters as an anonymous name but something you could identify versus several people being "anon".

I now have my own blog because I was inspired by Bill (and got tired of him censoring my posts).

I'm even on Pegasus, like Bill!

Now, did you guys actually have a point pertaining to the thread or did you just want to talk about me personally some more?

I am curious Mr. Walker, did you vote for conservatives who are against being financially audited and are willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars being "conservative."

Mr. Walker just earned his 2nd 30 day time out. There is no 3rd.

I have had to turn on comment moderation again. Sorry.

EEWWW, thanks Bill. I had no idea he was tallscot. I got into a knockdown drag out with him over the nets on golf course. Now the connections are coming together for me!

Please vote for change in the city of Melissa. Mayor David Dorman must be stopped from what citizens believe is total public corruption. Collin County is suffering. Elderly people are losing homes and citizens are being destroyed be David Dorman rulings.
