Is COG a commie front? (or is Self a kook?)

Reviving old 1950's red-baiting tactics, County Judge Keith Self, in a recent blog essay, has accused Collin County of "sliding into socialism".

He then compared the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) with Soviet Russia. Self wrote that:

"Central planning was a key precept in the former Soviet Union. And it was a colossal failure. Yet central planning is also a key function of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG.)"

(In a recent action, COG declined to appoint several of Judge Self's nominees to a planning board.)

In another paragraph, the County Judge states that, "Even our bond programs are built on socialism."

(This spring, Keith Self campaigned against the county's bond programs, instead wanting to finance local highways with "pass-through financing". Then last month, TxDOT announced that it was unable to fund any new "pass-through" programs as it was out of money.)

I wonder at the Judge's motive for writing such a libertarian manifesto. His pique at COG is obvious. I suspect he is still smarting over the passage of the bond package. Is he dismayed that the straw men he has put up to run against the incumbent commissioners are fairing poorly?

Whatever the reason, his weird blog post is a cause for concern.

I think Keith Self is sliding into senility.
